Alibaba bars staff from Anthropic's Claude Code, pushing them to in-house Qoder

Alibaba is barring employees from Anthropic's Claude Code on July 10, classifying it as high-risk software and routing them to its own Qoder tool. The move formalizes a two-way decoupling — Anthropic bars Chinese firms outright and ran a March experiment inside Claude Code that could covertly flag Chinese users, which Thariq Shihipar said the team would take down. For Chinese developer teams, frontier US coding agents are now off the table, hardening the split into parallel domestic and Western AI toolchains.
