Alibaba opens Qwen3.8-Max to developers, open weights due next week
Alibaba opened flagship Qwen3.8-Max — 2.4 trillion parameters, 95 billion active per query, a 1-million-token context window — to global developers through Alibaba Cloud's Model Studio APIs and the QwenWork agent platform, with open weights due next week. It is the first Alibaba open-source release at this scale, putting a frontier-size multimodal model in reach of any team that can host it rather than rent it through a closed API. Hong Kong shares closed 7% higher at HK$125.20.

The massive 2.4-trillion-parameter model supports a context window of up to 1 million tokens, meaning the model can process up to 750,000 words or their equivalent for each query.

Why this matters
- → First frontier-scale open weights model from Alibaba—1M-token context, multimodal, removes rental dependency
- → Puts trillion-parameter capabilities in reach of any team with hosting infrastructure
- → Intensifies open-source LLM competition; signals shift toward building moat on applications, not model access
