Amodei says Anthropic has never advocated banning open-weights models

Answering a 77-company letter organized around Nvidia, Dario Amodei wrote that Anthropic has never called for a ban on open-weights models, and named the three measures it does back: chip-export enforcement against smuggling, a crackdown on industrial-scale distillation, and mandatory safety testing for every sufficiently capable model, open or closed. That moves the US policy fight off open-versus-closed and onto compute access and pre-release testing — ground where Anthropic and most of the letter's signatories sit closer than the accusation implies.
