Anthropic confirms it is hiring a custom silicon team to design its own AI chips

Anthropic is recruiting chip designers to co-design hardware and models so Claude runs faster and cheaper — its first public confirmation of in-house silicon plans, with no timeline or manufacturing plan attached. In-house inference chips are becoming standard at the frontier, alongside OpenAI's Broadcom-built Jalapeño, Google's TPUs, and Meta's MTIA accelerators, and Anthropic's compute deals with AWS, Google, Nvidia, and AMD no longer cover demand for Claude on their own. The Information reported in July 2026 that Samsung was scouted as a fabrication partner.

to really scale to meet the level of demand, relying on others clearly isn't enough

Why this matters

  • → Frontier AI labs now own their inference hardware; Anthropic joining OpenAI, Google, Meta signals chip design
  • → Co-designed silicon cuts latency and cost per inference—key to scaling Claude beyond current vendor capacity
  • → Samsung partnership (per July reporting) suggests aggressive timeline and manufacturing commitment
