Apple's M5 Ultra Mac Studio runs frontier models on 512GB of unified memory
Apple's new Mac Studio tops out at a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, and 512GB of unified memory at 1.2TB/s, with Apple claiming 4.3x faster AI compute than M3 Ultra and 3.9x faster prompt processing than M4 Max. The real shift is memory, not raw compute — half a terabyte of unified memory puts frontier-class open-weight models on a desk, and four units clustered over Thunderbolt 5 with RDMA reach 3x the inference throughput of one. Pricing starts at $2,499 for M5 Max and $5,499 for M5 Ultra, with availability September 22. Every performance figure is Apple's own, measured against its prior silicon rather than against competing GPUs.

Mac Studio lets users run massive models entirely on device with complete privacy — without counting tokens or worrying about rising cloud costs.
Why this matters
- → 512GB unified memory puts frontier LLMs entirely on a single desk machine
- → Four clustered Mac Studios deliver 3x faster AI inference than one
- → Neural Accelerators in GPU cores dramatically reduce AI compute latency
