China's AI companion rules take effect, forcing Doubao and Qwen to shut down humanlike agents
China's Interim Measures for anthropomorphic AI took effect July 15, and rather than retrofit their systems, ByteDance's Doubao and Alibaba's Qwen switched off humanlike agent features overnight — Doubao leaves users read-only access until October 15, Qwen began deleting agent configurations immediately. The shutdowns are an architecture verdict, not a content ban: persistent-memory companionship is structurally incompatible with the law's mandatory anti-addiction interrupts and real-time dependence detection. That binary — rebuild from scratch or go dark — is the same one Character.AI, Replika, and every Western companion platform will face once their own regulators demand the test.
