Debian votes to let contributors code with AI
Debian passed Proposal E, "Responsible Use of Generative AI," which neither endorses nor bans AI tools in code, packaging, or documentation and puts the work of understanding, reviewing, testing, and fixing the output on the contributor. Disclosure is encouraged but not required, so a maintainer reviewing a Debian patch has no way to know an LLM wrote it. Gentoo bans AI use outright and OpenBSD and NetBSD reject AI-generated contributions, leaving Debian on the permissive side of that split.
