EU picks EUROPA consortium to build a 400B-parameter open-source frontier model across all 24 EU languages

The European Commission selected EUROPA — a consortium led by Italian firm Domyn — as the winner of its Frontier AI Grand Challenge to commission an open-source model exceeding 400 billion parameters, covering every official EU language on European infrastructure. If built to spec, it would be the first frontier-scale open-source model with full 24-language EU coverage — a multilingual base available to European developers, researchers, and public institutions without dependence on US or Chinese infrastructure.
