Google gives US college students a free year of AI Pro, normally $19.99 a month
Google is handing eligible US college students 12 months of AI Pro free — 4x higher Gemini limits, Gemini Spark, Gemini in Gmail and Docs, 5TB of storage, Google Health Premium — with AI Plus covering students in 140-plus other markets. This is distribution spending, not a model release: the accompanying features are study notebooks, a student hub at gemini.google.com/students, interactive 3D explanations, and Deep Research running asynchronously inside Gemini Live. A free year timed to the semester start buys Google habit formation in the cohort that will pick default AI tools for the next decade, at a per-student cost it can absorb.

Rolling out today, we're bringing the power of Deep Research into Gemini Live so you can launch comprehensive, multi-step research reports and chat with Gemini about them.
Why this matters
- → Google locks in a cohort's AI defaults before they graduate.
- → One-year free tier at semester start maximizes adoption and habit formation.
- → Study tools (notebooks, 3D visualizations, async research) convert free access into switching costs.
