Google loses Transformer co-author Shazeer to OpenAI and Nobel laureate Jumper to Anthropic in one week

Noam Shazeer — Google VP, Gemini co-lead, and co-author of the 2017 Transformer paper — announced June 18 he is joining OpenAI; John Jumper, a Google DeepMind VP and 2024 Nobel Chemistry co-laureate for AlphaFold, announced June 19 he is joining Anthropic. Alphabet shed roughly 7% — about $269 billion in market cap — in a single session, a market verdict on what it means when the researchers who built modern AI's foundations start migrating to its challengers.
