Illinois becomes first U.S. state to mandate annual third-party safety audits for frontier AI
Illinois SB 315, passed 110-0, requires frontier AI developers with over $500M in revenue to undergo annual independent audits, publish safety frameworks, and disclose pre-deployment risk assessments — effective January 1, 2027. OpenAI and Anthropic both supported the bill; a binding compliance standard for frontier AI is now state law, and the Illinois template is the first tested model for other states to adopt or tighten.
