Japan Plans Sovereign AI Model and 10 Million AI Robots by 2040

Japan's government will provide up to ¥1 trillion ($6.1 billion) over five years to Noetra, a SoftBank- and Sony-led consortium set to grow to roughly 44 companies, to build a homegrown AI model. A revised national robotics strategy sets a target of 10 million AI-equipped robots deployed across 18 sectors, including restaurants, food manufacturing and medicine, by 2040, aimed partly at offsetting Japan's shrinking workforce.

Why this matters

  • → Japan bets $6B on sovereign AI to escape US-China tech dependence.
  • → 10M robots by 2040 targets labor shortage from aging population.
  • → Physical AI deployment in real-world sectors still faces performance limits.
