Jeff Dean leaves Google to lead Discovery Loop, with Alphabet as a founding investor
Jeff Dean is leaving Google after more than 25 years to serve as CEO of Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation he is founding with Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le, and Oriol Vinyals to run thousands of experiments at once and automate complete experimental loops. The first target is ML research itself — the recursive self-improvement case — before hardware design, drug discovery, and clean energy. Alphabet is a founding investor and cloud partner, with Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures co-leading the seed, so Google loses its founding-era AI leadership and retains a financial stake in it.

You will get both a higher quantity and a higher quality of experiments, and that will lead to scientific breakthroughs and advances.
Why this matters
- → Google's founding AI leader exits to automate the scientific method itself
- → AI-driven experimentation could compress decades of discovery into months
- → Alphabet backs the venture, signaling confidence in recursive self-improvement
