Letara raises $16M to push hybrid rocket engines beyond satellite thrusters
Sapporo-based Letara raised ¥2.6 billion (~$16M) co-led by Headline Asia, JIC Venture Growth Investment and Incubate Fund, with Toyoda Gosei and JAXA-backed Frontier Innovations joining, to move from small-satellite thrusters into large rocket systems for space, defense, and security. The round tracks Japan's loosening of defense-export rules and its spending push for a domestic aerospace sector — Letara already holds orders from the Japanese government and from rocket and satellite makers, and next runs an in-orbit firing test with an overseas partner.

With this round, we will go beyond demonstrating that thruster in space. We plan to explore a much wider set of use cases across both the space domain and the defense and security domain.
Why this matters
- → Japan's defense-export liberalization creates commercial opportunity for hybrid rocket tech
- → Letara's low-cost fuel approach (plastic/rubber vs. paraffin) improves thrust efficiency
- → Market growing 15% annually; first mover in Japan among hybrid propulsion startups
