Meta begins production of its in-house 'Iris' AI chip in September
Meta will start manufacturing Iris — the latest of four in-house MTIA data-center chips it designed with Broadcom and TSMC builds — in September, after a six-week test run turned up no major issues, real progress for a silicon effort that had floundered for half a decade. The chip is aimed at cutting Meta's compute bill and loosening its dependence on Nvidia and AMD GPUs as it races to reach 14 gigawatts of AI computing by 2027 on a $145B infrastructure budget.
