Microsoft routes tens of thousands of weekly Excel and Outlook prompts to its own MAI models

Microsoft has begun shifting some Excel and Outlook AI prompts away from OpenAI and Anthropic to its in-house MAI models, which now handle tens of thousands of prompts weekly across the two apps. Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has said the aim is to shrink and eventually end its Anthropic spend, with a Teams transcription model due within months — a sign Microsoft's own models are now production-grade for its flagship software and its reliance on outside labs is set to fall.
