Microsoft Work IQ API goes GA, exposing M365 data to custom agents without a Copilot license

Microsoft's Work IQ is now generally available, giving custom AI agents access to Microsoft 365 email, calendar, meetings, files, and people through A2A, MCP, and REST endpoints — billed at $0.01 per Copilot Credit with no per-user license required. A developer can wire agents into M365 today using 10 generic MCP tools such as fetch, create, and update, with fine-grained policy enforcement and per-request audit logging built in.

Work IQ is built for an agent-first world, where AI agents, not human developers, dynamically reason, retrieve context, and act across systems.

Why this matters

  • → Agents can now access M365 data without per-user Copilot licenses, lowering deployment costs.
  • → Generic tools and dynamic schema discovery let agents adapt to new data sources without API changes.
  • → Fine-grained policy enforcement and per-request audit logging centralize security at the platform layer.
