Mozilla's State of Open Source AI: capability gap down to 3%, production adoption stuck at 51%

Mozilla's inaugural State of Open Source AI report puts the capability gap between top open-weight and closed frontier models at about 3%, with open models now carrying roughly a third of AI usage and leading developer adoption at 79% to 71%. The bottleneck has moved from capability to operations and trust: only 51% of open-model teams reach production against 63% for closed. Open still captures about 4% of AI revenue despite its usage share, a sign that value is concentrating in the agentic harness and tooling above the model rather than in the weights.
