OpenAI acquires Ona (ex-Gitpod) to give Codex agents persistent cloud execution

OpenAI agreed to acquire Ona — the startup formerly known as Gitpod — which provides secure, pre-configured cloud environments where Codex agents can access version control and test runners for hours or days after the developer closes the session. With 5 million weekly Codex users, the acquisition moves Codex from an in-session assistant to an autonomous executor for enterprises delegating multi-step or multi-day engineering work.
