OpenAI cuts off Cursor's model access after SpaceX's $60B acquisition

OpenAI is winding down developer access to its models on Cursor with a proposed Nov. 12 shutoff and no new models in the interim, saying it cannot trust SpaceX to stay inside its terms of service after acquiring Anysphere for $60 billion on Aug. 14. Cursor CEO Michael Truell put OpenAI's share at about 5% of user traffic and called the platform neutral infrastructure the company had trusted for years. Model access is now an instrument of ownership disputes — Anthropic, which blocked Windsurf last June, is publicly committing more compute to Cursor under SpaceX.
