OpenAI folds its safety team into research as its sixth safety leader exits in two years
OpenAI is dissolving its standalone safety-systems team into research and losing Johannes Heidecke, its safety-systems head since 2024 and the sixth senior safety leader to exit in roughly two years after Jan Leike and Miles Brundage. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen placed the merged group under an expanded VP of Research and Safety, Mia Glaese, with Saachi Jain as interim lead — a structural marker that safety no longer holds a separate seat at the frontier lab.
