South Korea commits $576B to chips and AI, with Samsung and SK Hynix each building two new fabs

President Lee Jae Myung announced an 800-trillion-won ($576B) program anchored by four new fabs — two each from Samsung and SK Hynix — in South Jeolla Province, plus an 81-trillion-won packaging cluster near Seoul. Lee framed it as a geopolitical race to secure 'core elements of AI faster than any other country,' while routing the majority of investment to southwest Korea as a domestic rebalancing play.
