Stripe to acquire OpenRouter for $7B+, five times its May valuation

Stripe has agreed to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion per Bloomberg, over five times the $1.3 billion valuation set in the startup's May 2026 Series B, backed by Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and CapitalG. OpenRouter routes 8 million users to 400-plus models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and DeepSeek, so the payments layer for the internet now owns the model-routing layer for AI — and the price says model-choice infrastructure, not any single model, is where the margin sits.
