TSMC and Sony sign a binding deal to make next-generation image sensors in Kumamoto by 2029
TSMC and Sony Semiconductor Solutions turned May's nonbinding memorandum into a definitive agreement: Advanced Vision Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. in Koshi City, Kumamoto, funded with roughly ¥465 billion from Sony and ¥282 billion from TSMC. Sony holds control and leads sensor design and product planning while TSMC supplies the advanced process, putting smartphone image-sensor development and volume manufacturing on Japanese soil alongside TSMC's existing Kumamoto fabs. The capital goes in phased with demand, and the investment is premised on Japanese government support.
