Twitch opts every creator into Amazon AI training by default

Twitch turned on a 'Training for Generative AI' setting on August 12 that feeds live streams, VODs, clips, and chat logs to Amazon's models, with every creator enrolled by default and no email or advance announcement. Chief product officer Mike Minton defended the default on stream — 'if this was opt-in, nobody would opt in' — and could not say whether creator content had gone into Amazon's training before the toggle existed. Amazon gains thousands of hours of consented-by-silence audio and video, and the opt-out sits in channel settings rather than the creator dashboard.

If this was opt-in, nobody would opt in. That's honestly the answer.

Mike Minton, Twitch Chief Product Officer

Why this matters

  • → Creators silently enrolled in AI training; only manual opt-out stops it.
  • → Amazon gains thousands of hours of voice and video without explicit consent.
  • → Twitch executive admits: opt-in model would fail, default opt-out is intentional.
