Codex and ChatGPT Work hit 10M combined users two weeks after launch

OpenAI's Akshay Nathan told Latent Space that ChatGPT Work and Codex reached 10 million combined users within two weeks of their July 9, 2026 launch, with Codex now powering ChatGPT Work — every non-engineer user runs the Codex harness. The two products share one agent harness and diverge only in UX, Git visibility, artifacts, and sandboxing defaults, so the coding-agent runtime a developer builds against is now the substrate for knowledge work. Knowledge workers were roughly 20% of Codex's user base in June and growing more than 3x as fast as developers.

Why this matters

  • → Knowledge workers vastly outnumber developers — 100x more people use code than write it
  • → Codex and ChatGPT Work now share one agent harness, making coding-agent runtime the substrate for all knowledg
  • → Knowledge worker adoption already 20% of Codex's base and growing 3x faster than developer usage
Agents for everyone
