
IBM's 2nm mainframe chip runs Arm and IBM Z instructions on the same core
IBM's next mainframe processor, built on a 2nm node with 11 cores above 5.7 GHz, puts Arm and IBM Z instructions on the same core executing concurrently — no emulation, no separate Arm and Z core clusters. It is the first silicon from the IBM-Arm partnership struck in April 2026, and it opens IBM Z and LinuxONE to Arm's 22-million-developer ecosystem while keeping the platform's encryption, fault recovery, and transaction guarantees. On-chip AI inference accelerators target in-transaction fraud detection, and a dedicated data processing unit handles I/O. IBM frames the chip as a design in progress, so shipping dates and delivered performance remain open.
