
Intel details Diamond Rapids at 256 cores and a 480GB air-cooled inference GPU
At Hot Chips 2026, Intel laid out three chips built on its own 18A process: Diamond Rapids, a Xeon with up to 256 cores, 1.28 GB of last-level cache and 128 PCIe Gen6 lanes; Crescent Island, a 350-watt inference GPU carrying up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X; and Wildcat Lake, Intel's first UCIe chiplet processor at 17 TOPS. Crescent Island is the load-bearing part — 480 GB in an air-cooled PCIe card means larger models and longer context windows fit into existing data center racks without liquid cooling retrofits. These are architecture disclosures, not shipping silicon, so the competitive read waits on volume and pricing.
