Sakana AI ships Namazu, a Japanese-tuned LLM API built on Moonshot's Kimi K2.6

Sakana AI opened API access to Sakana Namazu, the Japanese-specialized model behind Sakana Chat, post-trained from Moonshot AI's open Kimi K2.6 on in-house data for Japanese language and business context. Sakana reports neutrality on its internal FairPoliticsQA benchmark climbing from 34.10% to 56.30% over the base model, plus gains on Preferred Networks' JFBench instruction-following suite and on Japanese-English translation. It is OpenAI-compatible with built-in web search and code execution, so swapping base_url is the whole migration — and it stakes out the middle tier between costly frontier models and raw open weights, where Japanese enterprise buyers have had few options.

Why this matters

  • → Japanese enterprises gain a mid-tier LLM option between expensive frontier models and risky raw open weights.
  • → Built-in web search and code execution reduce integration friction for agent workflows.
  • → 56% jump on FairPoliticsQA shows dramatic gains on Japan-specific knowledge and neutrality.
