SoftBank raises a record ¥1 trillion from Japanese retail investors to fund AI
SoftBank will issue ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) of seven-year retail bonds on September 4 at an indicative 4.3%-4.9% coupon — the largest retail offering ever by a Japanese company and nearly double its own ¥600 billion record from April 2025. With the Bank of Japan's terminal rate priced under 2%, the AI buildout behind more than $60 billion in cumulative OpenAI commitments is now drawing on Japanese household savings rather than institutional credit.

With the market pricing the Bank of Japan's terminal rate at just under 2%, this level seems reasonably appealing for mom-and-pop investors.

Why this matters
- → Japanese retail savers now fund AI infrastructure via corporate bonds instead of bank deposits.
- → SoftBank's $60B+ OpenAI commitment requires tapping household capital as institutional credit tightens.
- → BOJ's sub-2% terminal rate makes 4.3%–4.9% coupon attractive to mom-and-pop investors seeking yield.
